About the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The NDIS is a scheme created by the Federal Government to offer assistance to individuals with disabilities in accessing essential care and support. The programme focuses on those with permanent or substantial disabilities that impede their capacity to perform day-to-day activities. The NDIS provides a broad range of care and support services designed to enhance their overall quality of life. Extensive information about the NDIS can be found on their official website.

Am I Eligible

To determine if you are eligible for NDIS support, various critical factors such as your age, residency status, location, and specific disability or early intervention needs need to be considered. It’s recommended that you use the NDIS Access Checklist to check your initial eligibility status. This will give you a better understanding of the requirements and help you determine if you qualify for NDIS support

How To Apply

When applying for the NDIS, follow these simple steps:

1. Check your eligibility: Use the NDIS Access Checklist to confirm your eligibility.
2. Apply: If eligible, complete the application over the phone, online or by post. Detailed instructions are available on the NDIS website.
3. Submit supporting documents: Provide proof of your disability, identity, and residency. The required documents are listed on the NDIS website.
4. Attend a planning meeting: After successful application, attend a planning meeting to discuss your needs and goals. You may bring a support person or advocate.
5. Develop a plan: An NDIS plan will be developed based on the information gathered in the planning meeting.
6. Put your plan into action: Start accessing the supports and services outlined in your plan once approved.
For more information and guidance, visit the NDIS website or contact their hotline.

NDIS Funding

While a person living with a disability may require various types of support, not all of them fall under the responsibility of the NDIS. Other areas of the government, such as state health systems or existing public/community services, may provide funding for some supports. The NDIS generally funds reasonable and necessary supports that allow people with disabilities to live an ordinary life. These supports and services can be categorised into three groups.

Advocacy

Disability advocates and programs play an important role to promote, protect, uphold and defend the human rights and wellbeing of people with disability, their families and carers. The Department of Communities provides funding to a number of advocacy organisations with the aim to provide a state-based, person centred approach to ensuring people with disability and those who share their lives, are engaged and feel empowered to live as they choose in a community where everyone belongs. These organisations are required to follow the principles of the Disability Services Act 1993 (Schedule 1 and 2), the National Standards for Disability Services and National Disability Advocacy Framework.
